With respect to ARs, how does the S&W rate?

I have a gun for sale someone is wanting to trade a S&W AR for. I'm not really into the mouse caliber (although it's so ubiquitous everyone should probably have a rifle in .223), but I'm definitely wanting to get a piston driven AR in 6.5 Grendel at some point, and possibly a .458 SOCOM.

So I'm wondering about the overall quality of the S&W AR lower, and how well it accepts other manufacturer's uppers. Any input is appreciated.

TIA

S&W ARs are excellent quality, and along with S&W's fine customer service record, you should do well with this trade. All original parts should be interchangeable and any quality upper should fit fine.

My friend owned one, he sold it after using it, jammed every other shot, also there are some youtube videos showing the same, see if I can find them for you.

There are also a ton of people who say they run flawlessly with 1500 rounds through them and not cleaning... seems to be about 50/50

Depends on ammo alot.

Was he shooting steel-cased ammo? Not recommended.

I have never heard of any complaints on the AR forums about SW quality. They were made by Continental Machine and Tool, an excellent company, and one of the oldest AR-15 subcontractors. Now, parts are made by CMT and Lewis Machine and Tool and just assembled by SW...

Again, if you have any issues with one, Smith and Wesson's customer service is first rate.

The ones I have seen have run flawlessly though I know the early contracted ones did have some issues.

Hmmm. I believe Continental Machine and Tool (not Century) makes govt contract parts and Stags Arms is their commercial market subsidiary.

It broke when Guns & Ammo was testing it.
My best friend trains people to shoot the M4 in the Army and shoots matches with them and swears by Rock River.
